Mechanical Seal Gland
Machined to the sealing face and the bolt circle of the seal it carries.
The gland holds the stationary seal face square to the shaft. If it is out of square the two seal faces run non-parallel, and a mechanical seal that runs non-parallel leaks — not eventually, but from commissioning.
So squareness of the register face to the bore is the dimension that matters, and it is cut in the same set-up as the bore itself. The rest of the gland is ordinary casting work.

What Is Difficult About This One
Every casting has one or two features that decide whether the batch repeats. On this part they are these.
Face and bore in one set-up
The whole reason for the casting's shape: it has to present the bore and the seal face to the machine together.
Flush and quench ports cored
Where the seal needs them, they are cored into the gland rather than drilled through a thin wall afterwards.
Stainless for chloride duty
CF8M where the flush water bites. A grey iron gland in chloride service pits at the seal face first, which is the one place it cannot be allowed to.
Alloy Options
The same geometry is a different part in three different plants. Chloride content, abrasion and temperature drive the choice — not the name of the fluid.
| Alloy | Grade | When it is the right choice |
|---|---|---|
| Grey iron | HT200 / HT250 | Default for water duty. Damps vibration, machines easily, lowest cost. |
| Ductile iron | QT450 / QT500 | When the duty is cyclic or the part takes shock. Tougher than grey. |
| WCB carbon steel | ASTM A216 WCB | Higher strength, weldable. For pressure-bearing bodies. |
| CF8M stainless | ASTM A743 CF8M | Chloride and corrosion duty — the cast equivalent of 316. |
What to Send Us
These are the ones specific to this part. A drawing, a 3D file or the worn original covers all of them at once.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Seal make and model | It fixes the register, the bore and the bolt circle in one go |
| Shaft or sleeve diameter | The bore the gland runs to |
| Flush plan | API plan number, or simply which ports you need and where |
