Extended Bearing Housing

A longer barrel, putting the bearing centre further out from the wet end.

Moving the bearings away from the pumped fluid is done for two reasons: heat, and room. On hot service the extra length keeps the bearing oil below the temperature where it stops being oil. On any service it leaves space for a longer seal chamber.

The cost is overhang. A longer shaft between the impeller and the front bearing deflects more for the same radial load, so the housing section and the foot both go up to compensate. It is not the standard housing with a spacer — it is a different casting.

Casting Notes

What Is Difficult About This One

Every casting has one or two features that decide whether the batch repeats. On this part they are these.

Longer barrel, same concentricity requirement

The two seats are further apart, so any bow in the casting shows up as a larger misalignment. Stress relief matters more here than on the short housing.

Heavier section, more feeding

More metal and a longer path to feed it. Risers are sized for the barrel, not for the average wall.

Foot moved and re-ribbed

It sits differently relative to the bearing centres than on the standard housing, so it is not interchangeable — check the pitch before ordering.

Alloy Options

The same geometry is a different part in three different plants. Chloride content, abrasion and temperature drive the choice — not the name of the fluid.

AlloyGradeWhen it is the right choice
Grey ironHT200 / HT250Default for water duty. Damps vibration, machines easily, lowest cost.
Ductile ironQT450 / QT500When the duty is cyclic or the part takes shock. Tougher than grey.
WCB carbon steelASTM A216 WCBHigher strength, weldable. For pressure-bearing bodies.
CF8M stainlessASTM A743 CF8MChloride and corrosion duty — the cast equivalent of 316.

What to Send Us

These are the ones specific to this part. A drawing, a 3D file or the worn original covers all of them at once.

ItemWhy it matters
Bearing designations and centre distanceThe distance is what makes it the extended version
Service temperatureThe usual reason for choosing extended over standard
Seal chamber lengthWhether the extra room is for a cartridge seal
