Motor Bracket, Lantern Type

A lantern bracket: square footprint, four open windows through to the shaft, and a machined register at the hub so the motor lands concentric with the pump.

The windows are there so the coupling can be reached and the seal inspected without pulling the motor. They also take a lot of metal out of the part — 212 × 212 mm across the flanges but only about 1.5 kg, because most of the middle is air.

Everything about this part is alignment. The hub register sets the motor concentric to the pump shaft; the four corner holes set it square to the base. If the register and the mounting face are not cut in the same set-up, the motor goes on cocked and the coupling wears out.

Casting Notes

What Is Difficult About This One

Every casting has one or two features that decide whether the batch repeats. On this part they are these.

Windows cast, not cut

Four openings formed in the mould. Cutting them afterwards would cost more than the casting and leave sharp internal corners.

Spokes carry the whole motor

What is left between the windows is the load path. Sections are kept even so they cool together and do not pull the flange out of flat.

Register and mounting face in one set-up

Both cut without re-fixturing. This is the difference between a bracket that aligns and one that just bolts on.
