Barrel Shroud
The outer shroud that goes round the pump barrel, with two mounting lugs and longitudinal stiffening ribs cast straight onto the shell.
Thin and deep is the difficult combination in sand casting. The metal has to run the full depth of the shell before it starts to freeze, which is why the ribs are where they are — they stiffen the finished part, but during pouring they also feed metal down the wall.
144 × 149 × 126 mm, about 2.4 kg in grey iron. One side is open; the two lugs are on the closed side and are drilled after casting.

What Is Difficult About This One
Every casting has one or two features that decide whether the batch repeats. On this part they are these.
Thin wall, full depth
Gating has to fill the shell before the wall freezes. On a section this thin that is a pouring-temperature and gating question, not a pattern question.
Ribs do double duty
They stiffen the shroud in service and help feed metal down the wall during pouring.
Lugs cast on, drilled after
Cast integral with the shell rather than welded — a welded lug on a wall this thin distorts the shell as it cools.
Alloy Options
The same geometry is a different part in three different plants. Chloride content, abrasion and temperature drive the choice — not the name of the fluid.
| Alloy | Grade | When it is the right choice |
|---|---|---|
| Grey iron | HT200 / HT250 | Default for water duty. Damps vibration, machines easily, lowest cost. |
| Ductile iron | QT450 / QT500 | When the duty is cyclic or the part takes shock. Tougher than grey. |
| WCB carbon steel | ASTM A216 WCB | Higher strength, weldable. For pressure-bearing bodies. |
| CF8M stainless | ASTM A743 CF8M | Chloride and corrosion duty — the cast equivalent of 316. |
What to Send Us
These are the ones specific to this part. A drawing, a 3D file or the worn original covers all of them at once.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Barrel outside diameter | The shroud has to clear it with the gap you want |
| Lug hole pitch and size | Both lugs, and which face they mount against |
| Whether the open end locates on anything | It changes whether that face gets machined |
